A Brief History of Coins and Coin Collecting

Very few things tell more about a country in fewer words than the coins it produces. Coins hold a wealth of information on their small faces, from the year of their birth to the language spoken at the time, from the metals a country holds valuable to the cultural influences and historical figures that its people hold valuable. Coins can also be strikingly beautiful in their own right, with the top designers of a nation striving to have their motif chosen for immortality on the face of a coin. With so much information and beauty contained in so small a package, it is no surprise that coin collecting has been a hobby nearly as long as the concept of coins themselves. An understanding of the long history of coin collecting, once known as ‘the hobby of kings,’ will make this pastime even more enjoyable. full story »

Australian gold fields are varied and set in the remotest parts of the country where you hardly see anyone, so its risky business just being in these areas as anything can happen snakes and poisonous spiders plus the heat being a worry.

I usually travel into these regions by myself as us gold seekers like to keep our finds to ourselves and thereby hang onto all the gold we find.

One of the best areas to do some prospecting in is about 1400 kilometers north west of Melbourne the capitol of the state of Victoria. full story »

I have to say I started all wrong. On my first real date with my wife, I took her out to go shooting. Now my wife did not know where we were going and had not really seen me since I had left for the Marines. We dated a few times in high school but never really hit it off. Imagine how she felt when I surprised her by pulling into the local gravel pit and pulling out a trunk full of guns, literally!

She took it pretty well, especially how I kept giving her new guns to shoot with many ‘tips’ on why she was not hitting anything and amazingly enough, we later married. I took some courses to learn how to teach and not just shoot. Unfortunately, my wife was still not very comfortable with me having or carrying guns. It was not until an incident at the local Wal-Mart, where my wife felt we were being followed by a guy that had paid just a little too much attention to our kid that she started to think maybe carrying guns wasn’t such a bad idea. full story »
